Persephone Reading Weekend
Posted on | January 31, 2011 | 35 Comments
My home internet has been repaired! Thank you to those who left supportive comments last week as obviously your positivity and good hopes for me paid off. Now, that is the good news, the bad is that I had a busy weekend so was unable to participate in the last few days of Virago Reading Week; I will, however, share my impressions on the reading I did soon.
As one celebration of a favourite imprint ends, so another is formally announced. Verity and I will be co-hosting our third annual blogging event dedicated to Persephone Books at the close of next month. Instead of a week this year we will be hosting a Persephone Reading Weekend during the last weekend of February (the Friday to Sunday). The reason we have shortened the event from a week to three days is because of how exponentially popular the event has become. Although we love hosting and enjoyed the last week, it was exhausting; by reducing the period we hope to run as successful and popular an event as years past but with a more manageable workload so that during Persephone Reading Weekend we too have the time and energy required for the reading.
We hope that you will continue to throw yourself into the Persephone fest with as much enthusiasm as before or that a weekend fits more conveniently into your own plans. As for the format, it won’t change between week and weekend: we will post Persephone features, reviews of Persephone titles and hopefully give away a Persephone or two as prizes. All you have to do is read one (or more) Persephone books and join in the fun.
Now to narrow choose which of those beautiful grey books to read over the weekend…

I’m already thinking about which of my Persephones to read. . . I have quite a stash saved up. Maybe it’ll be a personal Persephone week for me.
Oh, and I’m planning at least one giveaway, probably two! But it’s a surprise. That is all.

Hooray! So excited.

Jo – The Homemaker by Dorothy Canfield Fisher. My favourite Persephone. I may just read it again for the weekend

I shall be in Australia that weekend but will surely participate if I can tear myself away from the beach…….:)

Sounds brilliant! I’ve just finished my first Persephone and have one more to read so I’ll keep it for then.

Glad your internet is back up and running!

Agree with Elaine that The Home Maker is one of the very best Persephone titles, would also include amongst my favourites Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day, and Miss Buncle’s Book.

Hurrah looking forward to it already.

Aaack. It is a good thing it is only a weekend this time since I only have one Persephone in my Nightstand TBR pile and I am restricted to it until April 1st. It just occurred to me that I can only read one Persephone between now and April 1st. That is making the TBR dare a little harder than I thought it would be.
February 1st, 2011 @ 1:18 pm
Yay! It’s in my diary!
February 1st, 2011 @ 1:59 pm
I only have one unread Persephone… good thing I’ll be coming to London to restock
February 1st, 2011 @ 4:52 pm
I have a few Persephone Classics around, this will be a great reason to read them. Thanks!

I’m really looking forward to Persephone Weekend, and the next book in my TBR list is a Persephone, Family Roundabout by Richmal Crompton. Hopefully, I will get another one or two before the weekend starts.

Yes! So excited about this, especially as Virago Reading Week completely passed me by (although I did read Mrs Miniver by Jan Struther – oblivious involvement).
Cheerful Weather For The Wedding by Julia Strachey was the first Persephone I read but Mollie Panter-Downes might be the weekends choice. Moving house, starting a new job, etc means I need something jolly and fortifying!
February 1st, 2011 @ 9:22 pm
I will pencil this in my diary!

I am looking forward to the weekend so much. I’ve not yet read a Persephone but I’ve been eying them all year.
February 1st, 2011 @ 11:26 pm
Excellent! I enjoyed virago reading week and turned it into my personal month dedicated to virago reading, so perhaps I’ll extend the bounds of persephone reading weekend to a week (besides, I work over the weekends).

I’ve been anticipating this since I heard hints about it during Persephone Secret Santa! I have so many to read, namely the one from Nymeth, that I hope to get to at least a few. I sadly could not participate as much as I’d hoped in the Virago Reading Week. Life, interrupting my reading schedule, again.

It’s come around again?! That was fast! I remember last year I made myself a promise that I would participate and the even has just crept up on me again. I still have one Persephone waiting in the wings.
February 5th, 2011 @ 8:26 pm
oh must find my next read! Have many on my rereading list. Unfortunately, I’m doing the TBR dare and don’t already have any on my shelves….dare I break my TBR goal for this? Very tempted…
