Books - 20100705-1Here is a bundle of my latest review copies (and one competition win)  for the bibliophilic voyeurs amongst you.  Many thanks to Kirsty of Oxford University Press; Alice of Bloomsbury; Meike of Peirene Press; Fiona of Vintage; Harvey of Windmill and Rosamund of Penguin for supplying my summer, challenge and classic reading needs.  I read one of the above titles immediately and will be sharing my thoughts with you shortly – anyone care to guess which one I plumped for? Please feel free to ask or inform me about any of the above as I haven’t elucidated on my choices today (I have a busy day ahead and apologise for the short post).

I loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society! I disliked Eat Pray and Love a lot. I’m curious about the OWC copies (I can’t quite make out which titles those are). And I would love to read Hotel Iris, for the silly reason that it features my name. I’ve heard good things about the Makioka Sisters. Ooh! And a new Peirene title, would that be the first you read?

Apologies for not specifying the OWC titles (or any); the ones above are Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome, Indiana by George Sand and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

Iris, I’m always attracted to books with my name in title or a character too.

The Peirene wasn’t the first title I read but it will most likely be the second (and my first Peirene).

How do you get review copies sent you? I thought only the American publishers sent them out, I never realised the English ones do too.

Loved The Guersey Literaryone – an absolute fabulous read.

Great selection. I’m pleased that you’re planning to read Forgetting Zoe too – I have high hopes for it.

I have a feeling that you read The Guernsey Pie book first? Enjoy your new books :-)

I thought you had already read The Guernsey book so that really surprised me, I think you will really rather love it.

Envious of Hotel Iris as I now want to read everything by Ogawa!

I really want to read The Guernsey . . . so badly. I hope you enjoy Eat, Pray, Love more than I did (or my book club as well, for the matter!).

I will guess Eat Pray Love since summer fluff is called for right now and the movie version will be out soon. I really enjoyed the book once I got past the strangely disturbed crying in the bathroom bit.

I’m guessing you read The Makioka Sisters because the spine is a little bent. :D I love that book, though it took me a couple of months to finish, it was worth it.

Your Guernsey cover is a new design.. it’s lovely (I’m such a snoop I checked it out at The Book Dep, lol).

I want to read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, so looking forward to your review of that.

Most of my friends who’ve read Eat, Pray, Love have told me it’s not a book for me, and I should avoid it. Some of them did love it though…

What lovely pile of new books. I’m intrigued to hear about the new Peirene as Simon T kindly lent me their other two.

I thought the The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society (another one of those books hyped to death a couple of years back) was incredibly patronising, so will be interesting to see what you make of it.

Oh I see the Makioka Sisters on your stack. It’s a wonderful read. I hope you enjoyed it. I did like the Guernesey book but I tried to have low expectations as it was “the book” to read when it came out and I didn’t want to be thoroughly disappointed.

By the way, thank you for mentioning Peirene Press. I’ve been looking through their web site and of course have already added lots to my wishlist.

Have you read the Jerome K. Jerome yet? :P I can’t wait to hear what you think. Also, The Wind in the Willows is such a delight <3 And I need to get my hands on Indiana!
