Carter Collation Post V
Posted on | April 30, 2010 | 12 Comments
Where has April gone? My Angela Carter month has now drawn to a close and I am both saddened that it has come to an end and delighted at the reception it has received. I would like to extend thanks to those who have participated in the month by reading and reviewing Angela Carter’s books, as well as those who will do so in the coming months. This event has reaffirmed my love for my favourite author and you can look forward to another month in the future as well as occasional Angela Carter posts interspersed with my usual fare; first up will be my review of The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman, which will appear once Persephone Reading Week has come to an end.
This month was a celebration of aspects of Angela Carter and her work that I especially enjoy but I haven’t even scratched the surface. From the response, it appears that most of you share my enthusiasm for the writer and would look forward to my sharing of my passion on another occasion. I look forward to seeing how you all embrace and re-discover Angela Carter within your own reading experiences and I am thrilled that I could play a part in that.
In the meantime here is a collation of Angela Carter-related posts from this past week to enjoy:
Annabel of Gaskella re-discovered Carter (more successful this time) through The Bloody Chamber and thought her fairy tales were “the complete antithesis of the Disneyfied versions that dominate these days”.
Verity of Verity’s Virago Venture read her final Angela Carter Virago Modern Classic, Fireworks, and found the stories “wide-ranging – set in Japan, in the Orient, in the Jungle, but all full of intense imagery”.
Tea Lady of The Glittering Burn read Nights at the Circus for her first Carter, a feminist “book challenged [her] lazy preconceptions every step of the way.
Hayley of Desperate Reader also read Shadow Dance this month and thought Carter’s debut, “Tense and chilling, it’s a very convincing sort of gothic horror written and set in the 1960’s”.
Thank you again to everyone who joined me for Angela Carter month -whether out of curiosity or familiarity- and I do hope that you enjoyed it. If you haven’t had a chance to then please read my interview with Roxanna Bikadoroff, illustrator of Angela Carter’s books, as it was one of my highlights of this month.
I hope to see many of you next week for Persephone Reading Week 2010.

I have found this month really fascinating, seeing other people’s reactions to her and I was glad to have the impetus to read the rest of her Viragoes. Well done for organising Claire!

Thanks so much for hosting this Angela Carter Month Claire. Though I’ve not read The Bloody Chamber like I planned to, the many great reviews have definitely bumped it up on my list of books to get to ASAP.

Claire, I have just received The Magic Toyshop and am currently reading! Will post my thoughts hopefully before Persephone Week begins!

Claire, I would love to have joined in on this but have been trying to read a little more whimsically. I read The Bloody Chamber a long time ago and I remember Bluebeard made such an impression on me. I’m definitely up for a Persephone for next week though. A special trip to the library is in order!

Thanks very much for hosting. I’ve been meaning to get back to her for a long time, but I surely would not have done so this year without your encouragement. I also really enjoyed reading the other participants’ posts because even skimming them (so as not to give away plot details) gives me some idea what to expect next.

Thanks for a great month – loads of reviews for me to bookmark and read later.
I snuck in one more Carter post today, a couple of days after the month’s over. Whoops!
Hopefully, there’ll be a second episode of this, sometime next year or something… I still have loads of Carters left to read, so…
