Tuesday Teaser and Trivia
Posted on | February 23, 2010 | 11 Comments

A few Christmases ago my boyfriend bought me the Book Lovers Edition of Trivial Pursuit and I thought I could virtually play with my fellow book lovers, or at least ask you a weekly literary question. So here goes (if you win then please treat yourself to a slice of pie/cake/pizza/delete where appropriate)…
From the Children’s Literature section:
What Ursula K. Le Guin novel tells of young Ged’s first trip to the wizards’ school on Roke?

Quote a couple of spoiler-free sentences from the book you’re reading to tempt others.
“Many authors from their preoccupation with words have the bad habit of choosing those they use in conversation too carefully. They form their sentences with unconscious care and say neither more nor less than they mean.”

Is it in A Wizard of Earthsea? I confess I haven’t actually read the book nor seen Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film, but I’ve heard a lot about it.

That’s a great Tuesday Teaser; Somerset Maugham is an author that I have been intending to get around to for a long time…

Which edition do you have of the Maugham? It features in the Penguin Postcards – I sent it to a friend!

Sakura, it is indeed! I read it for uni but wasn’t that impressed.
Sarah, I’ve been meaning to read Somerset Maugham too and relieved that I am finally doing so.
Verity, I have the funky new Vintage cover and it would show on my “I Am Reading” link if Amazon had it (they have old cover under ISBN).

Wizard of Earthsea! I know that one, but I wasn’t crazy about it. I’ve heard the sequels are better.

Jenny, I wasn’t crazy about it either and couldn’t be bothered with the sequels.
JoAnn, this is my first Maugham book and I’m very excited.

I love LeGuin: she is one of my MRE authors (Must Read Everything). The first in the Earthsea isn’t my favourite but I do enjoy it in the context of the series as a whole. I re-read them all a few years ago, borrowing the older-styled hardcovers from the library so that I could enjoy the woodcut illustrations. It’s interesting to watch as the female characters grow and claim more prominent places in the later works.

Buried in Print, I do intend to give Le Guin abother read at some point but it won’t be the Earthsea quartet.
